Gold was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 20th, 1950. Gold is the grandchild of a pawnbroker, and the third generation of owners of American Jewelry and Loan, a pawn shop in Detroit.
Gold started his first business at the age of 12, purchasing pizzas and selling slices to other pupils in Hebrew School. Gold founded American Jewelry and Loan in 1978. The business has since expanded to include five locations.

Gold was established as an American Jewelry and Loan in 1978. The company was initially situated in Oak Park, Michigan, however, it relocated to its present location in Detroit in 1993. American Jewelry and Loan is today one of the biggest Pawn stores in the United States.
Since 2009 gold began being featured on the reality TV show Hardcore Pawn. This show follows the day-to-day activities of American Jewelry and Loan and has proven to be a huge success with the ratings on truTV. Gold is now a well-known persona in the series, well-known for his flamboyant and outspoken character.
